Name: Jim Messmer

Background: · I have been a WNPS member for decades and have enjoyed taking part in field trips and presentations. · I received a BS in botany from the UW in 1971 and have been very involved and interested in taxonomy since that time. · I spent my career as a land and facility manager for the Girl Scouts of Western Washington and have lived on the west shore of Hood Canal for the past fifty years. · During the late 90's and early aughts I worked part time as a wetland delineator, primarily in Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties. · More recently (past 5 years) I have been doing field work for Dave Peter (USFS) in his research of the 'Indigenous Prairies of the Olympic Peninsula' . This has involved generating plot data, mostly in the SE Olympic area locating beargrass savannas. · I have been monitoring the Mason County chinquapin tree (Chrysolepis chrysophilla) population since the 1980’s and currently maintain and update a database that includes most of the individual trees in that population. This has been shared with the DNR NHP database. · I have recently taken an interest in expanding the known range of Woodwardia fimbriata and maintaining a database for those new locations throughout the mid Hood Canal area. Also shared with DNR NHP
